Four years from now, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will be replacing the ICD-9-CM code set. The proposed compliance date is is set for October 1, 2013. ICD-9-CM Volumes 1 and 2 for physicians will be converted to ICD-10-CM, and ICD-10-PCS will replace ICD-9-CM Volumes 1, 2, and 3 for hospitals.
In its current draft, ICD-10-CM includes five times more codes than the ICD-9-CM code set. Conversion to ICD-10-CM will impact business operations, and result in estimated costs of $28,000.00 per practice to transition over to the new ICD-10-CM coding system.
