Learn to Code ICD-9-CM, or Sharpen Your Knowledge
- Contains the latest official ICD-9-CM coding guideline and code changes
- The most widely used publication for teaching entry-level and experienced coders
- Includes Central Office advice on ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS
The ICD-9-CM Coding Handbook is the only guide published in collaboration with the Central Office on ICD-9-CM of the American Hospital Association (AHA). The Central Office is an official industry body that participates in the editorial development, preliminary testing, and national committee and congressional hearings on ICD-9 and ICD-10 specifications and rules. Central Office staff are the nation’s experts on coding protocols and prepare two official publications in addition to the coding handbook: AHA Coding Clinic for ICD-9-CM and ICD-9-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting. The ICD-9-CM Coding Handbook helps coders understand the basic principles behind the classification system so they can apply the official coding advice provided by Central Office publications. The Handbook is the premiere coding textbook in the United States.
The Handbook is designed for academic and in-service training programs, in-service performance evaluations and individual self-instruction, and it can be used as a workplace reference. It is used in conjunction with the three volumes of the ICD-9-CM coding manual. Chapters 1-8 provide discussions of the format, conventions and current coding practices as well as basic coding guidelines and introductory materials on the V and E supplementary classification codes. The remaining chapters work from the less complicated to those that are more difficult.
Instructors can easily arrange their course outlines around Handbook chapters to train new and experienced students. Each Handbook provides 100+ review exercises that describe additional information about a patient’s background or condition, and allow coders to practice their coding skills on examples based on diagnostic statements. The appendix contains official guidelines for coding and reporting.
Exclusive ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS Additions
The 2008 edition contains information on the development and field testing, as well as the structure, format, and conventions of upcoming ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding. It also identifies action checklists, reference resources and strategic implementation issues health information management professionals and provider organizations should consider when they transition from the ICD-9 to ICD-10 system.
Continuing Faye Brown’s Format, Style and Thoroughness
The first edition of the ICD-9-CM Coding Handbook was developed by the AHA’s Central Office on ICD-9-CM staff and published in 1979. Faye Brown, in cooperation with the AHA’s Central Office, authored and revised the 1980-2003 editions.
Nelly Leon-Chisen, RHIA, who worked with Ms. Brown for more than a decade, has led the team of contributors who have updated the Handbooks since 2003. Nelly is the director of coding and classification at the AHA, where she heads the Central Office on ICD-9-CM and the Central Office on HCPCS. She represents the AHA as one of the ICD-9-CM cooperating parties responsible for the development of AHA Coding Clinic for ICD-9-CM and ICD-9-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting.
New Instruction Supplements!
Instructors using the 2008 editions will have new materials to help train students and conduct classes. Materials include PowerPoint slides with an outline of each Coding Handbook chapter, as well as a reminder of the most important points contained in each chapter. An exercise bank, containing case summaries based on the health records of actual patients will also be offered. The bank provides exercises that may be incorporated into quizzes and tests, or assigned for extra-credit work.
These elements will be in a downloadable format available after August 27 at the AHA Central Office Website: www.AHAcentraloffice.com
